Transformative Social Emotional Learning & Leadership

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is More Than a Curriculum

Following COVID, districts and schools have invested significant resources and time adopting high-quality SEL curriculum. Yet, teachers and administrators are finding teaching more challenging than ever before. The number one challenge? The increasing social and behavioral needs that impact students' readiness to learn, school culture and safety.

Why, after so much time and money spent adopting SEL curriculum do many schools report struggling to meet the social, emotional and behavioral needs of their students?

While high quality SEL curriculum is important, adopting an SEL curriculum alone will not produce systemic change in wellness or culture for students, adults or schools.

That's because social-emotional learning is bigger than just a curriculum - its a living framework for building safe, inclusive and equitable school communities that helps every student feel secure, valued, and ready to learn.

Pathways: The Power of Co-Created SEL

We partner with districts and schools to develop comprehensive SEL implementation frameworks, including staff professional development, collaborative team structures, goal setting, data systems, coaching, and stakeholder feedback.

We believe lasting change happens when we blend the best of research with the reality of day-to-day school life. NEB's approach to systems-level SEL improvement brings together:

  • The CASEL framework's proven competencies

  • Relationship-centered, trauma-informed practices that create safe spaces for learning

  • Culturally responsive teaching that acknowledges and honors every student's story

  • Building resilient school communities through a restorative approach

  • Fostering engagement and achievement through authentic integration of SEL into academics

  • Ongoing, hands-on support to make sure SEL isn’t just a set of ideas on paper, but a goal oriented process for meaningful, incremental change

Partnerships: The Power of Partnership in Action

Here are just a few of the ways NE Basecamp is partnering with districts and schools to build effective, sustainable social-emotional learning frameworks across Rhode Island:

  • 📣 Collaborating with Woonsocket Education Department to enhance K-12 SEL by integrating PBIS, restorative practices, and mental health support. The data tells an incredible story! Schools have shown remarkable growth in PBIS implementation with decreases in chronic absenteeism (30%), major referrals (38% decrease), and class cuts (23% decrease)!

  • 🤝 Partnering with UCAP for a three-year improvement project to implement school-wide, culturally responsive, social-emotional learning through teacher professional development, 1:1 coaching, leadership and SEL team facilitation. The results are in! Beginning of year walkthrough data indicates a mean rating increase of .39 from Spring '24 and .72 from baseline data in Spring '23 across SEL indicators.

  • 📝 Co-leading systemic school-wide SEL goal setting, planning and implementation with Johnston Public School District. We're laying the foundations for the Johnston Wellness Team to learn about best practices for meeting facilitation, action planning, team-driven shared SEL leadership.

  • 👉 We recently debuted the NE Basecamp "Tuning for SEL Protocol" a step-by-step process that helps teams of educators work together to get and give supportive feedback on the authentic integration of SEL in academic content.
